One of the lessons that we have learnt from this pandemic is to love and nurture nature. In our quest to grow as humans, we have taken the environment for granted. But when the sea level rises, and nature returns all the trash that we put into it through floods and tsunamis, that should be enough realization for us to stop and think. Nature is sending us a message and we know we have been faltering in our acts and it’s time to mend the damage that we have done over the years.
So, this World Environment Day on 5th June, let’s start being conscious about our choices, bring small changes to things that we do and how we do and make this earth a better place to live in.
Here are 6 simple things that you can follow at home and save the environment;
-
Conserve Water
Water is precious and while we know that earth is 70% water, we also know that we have little of it left for the future generations after all the pollution and damage that we have done to it. Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth and go for a bucket instead of a head shower everyday which could save you liters of water.
-
Three R’s
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Cut down on your waste, reuse what you can and recycle where you can. Segregate the garbage to dry and wet waste. Make a separate bag for items which can be recycled. Say no to cutlery that comes with food takeaway.
-
Switch to sustainable
Plastic has been deteriorating our earth in all its forms. Switch from plastic to glass or steel containers and bottles. Swap the plastic bags for a cloth or jute bag. Switch from use and throw to sustainable in the little things you use everyday.
-
Get more Plants
We all need oxygen to survive so why not get the source home. Plants at home will improve the oxygen level and also purify the air indoors. Peace lily, Aloe Vera, Money plant or Snake plant will not only make your home look beautiful but also give you fresh and clean air to breathe.
-
Save Electricity
We all need to reduce the unnecessary usage of electricity at home. Charging the phone for the entire night while it only needs 2 hours is a sheer waste of energy. Use the air conditioner wisely as it releases tons of carbon dioxide which is a major contributor to ozone depletion.
-
Dispose your masks carefully
When you are throwing away your masks, make sure you cut off the ear loops and then throw the mask away. The ear loops cannot be recycled and disposing the masks with the ear loops on makes the masks unrecyclable.
We all need a balanced environment to survive otherwise life cannot be sustained. So, let’s spread awareness and value what has been given to us and celebrate Environment Day for each day of our life.
